The brothers Gute, Graip and Gunnfjaun were, according to the legend, sons of Havde and Vitastjerna. After their father's death, the brothers split on Gotland. Gute received the middle part, Graip the north and Gunnfjaun the southern. Gute was appointed chief and has given name to both the island and the people, "gutar".
